A30 junction layout to change
20 July 2007: A temporary traffic layout is intended to ease congestion on the A30.
One of the west country's West Country's worst bottlenecks is set to be relieved by temporary improvements to the layout of a junction on the A30, the Highways Agency has asserted.
Due to be installed overnight on July 21st, the work is planned to ease congestion on the A30 approaching Junction 31 of the M5.
The Agency intends to complete the installation in time to relieve heavy traffic during the peak summer period.
Agency Manager Nigel Dyson said: "This measure will help reduce queues of traffic leaving Devon and Cornwall via the A30 and M5, helping holidaymakers, lorry drivers and local people.
"By next summer we hope to have a permanent solution in place that will further ease congestion at one of the busiest junctions in the South West."
The new layout will allow two lanes of traffic to use the slip road while observing a 50 mph speed limit, while clear signing well in advance of the junction will be used to instruct motorists about which lanes of the A30 can be used to proceed on to the M5.
The Agency intends to install a permanent scheme in the autumn.
Works to install the temporary scheme are to be conducted between 20:00 on July 24th and 06:00 on July 25th, when traffic flows are lower.
Since the eastbound carriageway of the A30 will be closed from the Alphington Interchange, diversions will be in place.
Road users intending to proceed on to the M5 northbound will be diverted to exit at Alphington Interchange and follow Alphington Road (A377), Marsh Barton Road, Bad Homburg Way (B3123) and the A379 before rejoining the M5 at Junction 30.
Meanwhile, motorists wishing to travel on the A38 southbound will be directed to use Alphington Interchange and follow Alphington Road (A377), Marsh Barton Road, Bad Homburg Way (B3123), and the A379 to reach the A38 at Wobbly Wheel Junction. |
